Peveril of the Peak. By the Author of 'Waverly, Kenilworth,' &c.
Scott, Sir Walter

Edinburgh: Archibald Constable, 1822. First edition Four volumes. 12mo. First edition, first state. Original drab boards; paper spines and printed paper labels. Half-titles present in all volumes. Scarce first state, with Vol. 4, p. 253-254 integral and not a cancel, and with 'circum-' in line 3 and the two place names in line 6 of page 253. Vol. 2, 305-306 and Vol. 3, 15-16 are cancels as called for in Worthington. This is a beautiful set in original boards; however, a close inspection suggests that the spines and probably the labels may have artfully been replaced at an early date. The endpapers are later, and bear a watermark of Britannia seated and what appears to be a date of 1830. The original boards have some wear to the edges and some loss of paper to one volume. A remarkable and scarce set, possibly in full original bindings but likely in bindings restored in the early twentieth century. In a custom cloth clamshell case of about that period. Near fine Hardcover (Item ID: 1032-ML-1077)
