Paris and Angouleme: A. Levy, Librairie Nilsson, G. Chasseignac, 1888-1891. Five archeological monographs. The first two are extracts from the Gazatte Archeologique. All are illustrated with engravings, photographs, or, in the case of the last item. 26 fine full page chromolithographed plates. In a fine, full red crushed morocco binding with the arms of the House of Romanov in gilt on the boards (Griffin segreant with sword and round shield ensigned upon its upper edge with an eaglet all within a border charged with eight lion's heads, the entire surmounted by the Imperial Crown of Russia). Spine in six compartments with raised bands, simple gilt title. Large gilt dentelles; all edges gilt; marbled endpapers, repeated with a second set both in front and in the rear. Inscribed by the auithor on a preliminary blank: "A Son Altesse Impériale Monseigneur le Grand Duc Serge Alexandrovich. En humble et trés respecteuex hommage. Baron Le Baye." Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich (1857-1905) was the uncle of Tsar Nicholas II, the son of Tsar Alexander II and brother to Tsar Alexander III. He was born in Tsarskoye Selo in 1857 and killed by revolutionary assasins in 1905. Laid into the book is a sale notice from Gilhofer and Ranschburg announcing a 1932 sale of, inter alia, books from the library of the Tsars of Russia at Tsarskoye Selo, of which this was presumably one. Upper hinge neatly repaired else this is a near fine copy. There is a sticker on the rear pastedown--probably a bookseller's sticker--in Cyrillic for "Antiquarian Section" . Very good Hardcover (Item ID: 17409)
