Welcome

Thorn Books was established in 1987. Our name comes both from the Thorn of Glastonbury with its Arthurian connotations, and the Old English alphabet letter, the thorn: Þ.  We were admitted to the Antiquarian Booksellers Association of America in 1991. Our focus is on  fine books in all fields, but with a special attention to material related to King Arthur and Early Britain (including England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales).

Large folio, approximately 21 by 14¼ inches. English yew boards by George Coulter, Ltd., natural hide spine, gilt block lettering by Ted Robbins of the Royal College of Art Bookbinding. Sixteen loose folios of text and illustrations, each signed or initialed by the artist. A fine copy in the original purple cloth chemise, now a trifle sunned. Accompanied by the original prospectus approximately 14 by 20 inches and framed behind acrylic. A fine copy of Clarke's first hand printed artist book, memorializing a little known Arthurian legend. Two Idylls: Gareth and Lynette and The Last Tournament. Full contemporary dark blue niger morocco binding by Mansell. Raised bands; spine in six compartments, gilt. Gilt rules and corner ornaments on upper and lower boards. Gilt inner dentelles. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. A few minor scuffs, but a fine copy in a lovely binding. Gareth and Lynette, Etc.

Illustrated throughout in black and white by the author. Trace of soil and wear to the binding, tiny closed marginal tear to a contents page (no loss), else a near fine copy. 12mo. 305pp. Publisher's blue cloth, gilt titles on spine and upper board. Decorated endpapers. A very good copy. The dustwrapper is not price-clipped but it lacks a small piece at the lower corner of the upper board and another on the rear board; is rubbed at hinges and chipped along the edges but still in good condition and quite presentable. Signed by the author and then a lengthy inscription from the author on the front free endpaper: "Love to you, Betty, and every good wish for the future...." The inscription is dated June 9, 1929.
