London: J. F. Dove, et al, 1822. New edition Illustrated edition, with engraved portrait frontispieces. Complete in thirteen volumes: eight volumes of Hume's history and five of Smollett's. Contemporary straight-grained crimson leather. Spines in five compartments with raised bands, gilt; Boards with gilt and blind fillet borders; gilt inner dentelles; all edges gilt. Edges lightly rubbed, some staining and soiling, and spines darkened else a very good set. Hume was a key figure in Western philosophy, but is perhaps more known for his History, which was a bestseller well into the nineteenth century and the standard work on English history for many years. The continuation is by Tobias Smollett, himself a literary figure of merit and an associate of Johnson, Goldsmith and Sterne. Very good Hardcover (Item ID: 50083)
