Small 8vo. 792pp. Original publisher's sheep. Signatures sprung from use, but firmly attached; pages soiled and with some contemporary markings; old repair to the spine else the binding is in very good condition. Ownership name of Dan Smith dated 1828, and, later, 'Dan Smith, His Book'. The New Testament has a separate title page. In this copy there is a short note pinned to its verso, listing the births of members of the McNees family in the late nineteenth century. Reputedly the first Bible printed west of the Allegheny River and the first Bible in English printed west of the Allegheny Mountains. A well used copy, but in good condition. Very scarce. Original full leather; spine in 5 compartments with raised bands, red leather lettering piece, gilt. Remnants of clasps at the fore-edge. Imperfect copy: lacks the front free endpaper, 4 leaves of Genesis (A2-5) and a leaf of Solomon (3A5). In addition 3 leaves of Solomon (3A2-4) and 2 leaves of Matthew (C3-4) are defective with loss, and T2 of the NT lacks the lower corner with loss. Illustrated with 2 full page illustrations in the OT and 7 in the NT. A well used Bible and quite scarce. One of the earliest papier-mâché bindings, reminiscent of a Gothic carved binding, in high relief showing the symbols of the Evangelists in the corners, with the figure of a sower in the center. 2-1/16 by 1-7/8 inches. 144 leaves. Original binding of brown leather intricately blind-stamped to resemble an ancient binding; the title appears on the spine and on both boards as part of the design. This is a reprint of the third edition of 1693; it closely follows the original but has a few changes in setup and spelling. The reprint of the 1693 title pages, without dates, are present as is the Imprimatur with the 1693 date. Lacks the Longman 19th century title page which is provided in facsimile from the 1849 printing. There were 4 editions of the reprint with the Chiswick Whittington colophon, from 1849-1854. The last of the Chiswick Whittington printings was in 1856, but that printing omitted the word 'Finis' at the end (present in this copy) and so this copy is from one of the first four reprints. The front free endpaper has also been replaced and the spine neatly repaired; clasp lacking, else this is a very good to fine copy. Scarce and seldom found complete. Exquisitely illuminated by hand by Valenti Angelo with pure gold and colors with gold initials. Hand-bound by Gerhard Gerlach in natural niger and boards, blindstamped. Selected by the American Institute of Graphic Arts as one of the Fifty Best Books of 1935. A fine copy. No slipcase.

12mo. 108pp. Publishers original drab brown cloth; upper board blocked in gilt with title within a floral design. Ink name on front pastedown. Cloth soiled, binding lightly shaken, gilt rubbed else a very good copy. The date of publication is taken from the Advertisement, page 4. This seems to be the first Oliver and Boyd printing of a hieroglyphic Bible and the second Edinburgh printing after the Doig and Sterling edition of 1814. The accepted publicaton date for this Bible is 1818; three other known copies are known to have been issued either in quarter leather and marbled paper boards, or in printed card covers. Our copy is in what is clearly publisher's cloth with gilt blocked on the upper board. This combination is unknown before 1826. It is likely, then, that the textblock, while printed earlier, was bound after 1826. Exceedingly scarce. Protected in a custom clamshell box.

Includes 4pp of family records between the Testaments, with the surnames of Williams, Wright and Bartlett. Illustrated with engravings and maps. Somewhat foxed, as usual. The "Polyglottt" Bible was actually the English text from Samuel Bagster's genuine polyglot Bible which had originally been printed in 1822 with the text in eight languages. The first American edition of the English Polyglott Bible was printed in 1831 (See Hill, 753). Somewhat foxed, as usual, and a couple of signatures loose, some light staining to the preliminaries,but a very good copy. Hill, The English Bible in America, 820. Woodcut initials throughout, with hand-painted initials at the beginnings of some of the books. 18th century half leather, paper boards, gilt title. Leather worn at edges, but hinges fine. Ownership bookplates and names on endpapers, and in contemporary hands on title page. Light soil on title page; one page with closed marginal tear, extending in the text, early repaired with archival tape; another page with a burn mark obliterating a portion of text and with an early paper repair. Otherwise a clean, tight copy. In the Colophon: "Imprensis vero honesti viri Joannis parvi eiusdem universitatis librarii. in dicto vico in leone argenteo commorantis. Anno ab incarnatione domini millesimo quingentesimo quarto. pridie idus Decembris." See note after Darlow and Moule, 6090: A folio edition of the Bible ... was printed at Paris by Thielman Kerver for Johannes Parvus (i.e., Jean Petit), 12 Dec. 1504: Copinger 132. This Bible and other contemporary editions contain the corrections made by Albertus Castellanus (i.e., da Castello).... The 'plenus apparatus' includes various preliminary pieces and other helps in the description of earlier editions. T. Kerver was a German who began printing in Paris in 1497, and produced many beautiful books of devotion."

Contemporary full vellum; spine title is a square of gilt titled in blind. Title page in red and black. Plates are tables of Eastern languages alphabets and syllabaries. 'Manuductio nova et facilis ad accentuationem V. T. prosaicam et metricam' has a special title page dated M.DC.LXXXIIX, and separate pagination. Treats of many Eastern languages, including Coptic, Armenian, and, on p. 312, 'lingua Sinica'. Chapter 7 treats of the Kabbalah and 15 of the Talmud. A very good copy.

12mo. vi, (ii), 436pp. (but p. 426 is mispaginated as 536). Contemporary full calf. Spine with gilt rules and red lettering piece, gilt. Two bookplates of a former owner. Old neat hinge repair, wear to corners and spine tips, some soiling and foxing but basically a very good copy in original binding. Important on several fronts. This is first book printed by America's first Catholic publisher, Christopher Talbot, 'late of Dublin'. Talbot later went on to co-found the Pennsylvania Herald. The title page states this is the third edition, but it is unclear where the earlier editions were published, or whether the statement represents an edition in English or in the original French. This is the second American printing of this title; it was originally printed in Baltimore in 1780; this is the first Philadelphia printing. It was important also to the Catholic community of the time as the first Catholic edition of Scripture, the Douai-Rheims version, was not printed in America until 1790 (see Darlow and Moule, the entry after 949.) The list of subscribers includes John Carroll. Rare.
