Many leaves are worn at the edges, including the title, which is worn at the bottom edge just affecting the imprint date. The vellum cover is similarly worn and appears to have shrunk over the years. Remnants of a manuscript title on the spine. Contemporary ownership name on the title page. Neat 18th century notes on the reverse of the title, at the end of the Preface, and completely filling the obverse of leaf )(8; occasional marginal notes in the same hand in the text proper. The original sewing thread, having perished, has been replaced with modern linen thread in the same holes. 20th century bookplate on inside front cover. A very good copy in spite of its faults, and complete. This treatise by King James on government and conduct guidelines was first published in 1599. The demand was apparently so great that it was quickly reprinted by several printers. This edition is distinguished by the royal arms on the title page. Housed in a protective custom clamshell case of full calf tooled in the manner of a 17th century book. with marbled edges, raised bands, and a red leather lettering piece, gilt.  ESTC S107536.  Small folio. The third edition, corrected, to which is added an Index explaining the names of countries, cities, rivers, etc. (20),296,(4)pp.  Errata description on final text page. Contemporary full calf tooled in a Cambridge design. Spine in six compartments with raised bands; red leather lettering label, gilt. Armorial bookplate. Hinges and spine tip neatly and nearly invisibly mended,  light wear and soiling else a very good copy in contemporary binding. 'Prince Arthur' opens with Arthur's return to Britain to reclaim the crown, and culminates with the final single battle between Tollo and Arthur for control of the kingdom. Taken from Geoffrey of Monmouth, and modelled stylistically on Virgil ('I sing the Briton and his Righteous Arms'), Prince Arthur was a great favorite of King William. Wing B3082. See Lowndes 211.  Early edition. 8vo. (xii),466pp. Contemporary full sheep; spine in 6 compartments with raised bands, gilt. Decorated edges. Paste paper endpapers of stylized flowers and leaves. Printer's device on the title page; woodcut tail pieces. So far as we can determine, this is the second edition, the first dating from 1745 (and the Preface is indeed dated 1745). Upper hinge neatly repaired; spine gilt nearly perished; wear to the head and tail of the spine and the corners, else a very good copy.

Glazed pictorial boards printed in color. Pictorial endpapers in color. Four fabulous and detailed double-page pop-up scenes, plus full and partial page b&w's throughout. Boards somewhat soiled, corners worn, head and tail of spine lacking (neatly repaired). Corner of front free endpaper expertly and nearly invisibly replaced. The first pop-up scene has a few minor repairs to fix closed tears; the remaining four popups are in fine condition. Occasional light soiling of text pages. Overall a very good copy.

V; Historia Plantarum, lib. IV; Conradus Gesnerus (Konrad Gesner) Caspari Collino Pharmocopoeo; Silva Observationum uariarum, Valerii Cordi; Val. Cordi de Artificiosis Extractionibus; Val. Cordi Compositiones Medicinales Aliquot, non Vulgares; and the beginning of Stocc-Hornii et Nessi in Bernatium Heluetuorum. Early 19th or late 18th century binding of quarter leather, marbled paper boards; gilt rules on spine; black leather lettering piece, gilt, titled: DIOSCORIDIS ANAZARBEI OPERA. Lacking 8 preliminary leaves, folios 232, and 235 to the end, and therefore commencing with folio 1. With the armorial bookplate of Charles Atwood Kofoid. A few tiny wormhboles occasionally affecting a letter or a woodcut line, but generally in non-printed areas; some leaves with a light tide mark; a very good copy which, even tough lacking title and colophon, contains all of the celebrated woodcuts. Occasional notes in a contemporary hand which also usually crosses through the name of Gesner.
