Boston and New York: Lee & Shepard; Lee, Shepard, and Dillingham, 1872. First US edition. Hardcover. Very good. Item #17172
8vo. (xii),224,(i)pp. Original publisher's green cloth blocked in gilt on the boards with vignettes of the Red (front) and White (rear) Queens within triple gilt borders; spine title in gilt with an ornament and, at the base, the Lee and Shepard monogram. Chocolate brown coated endpapers. Illustrated by John Tenniel. With the Macmillan device on the page facing the contents. First state, with "wade" in the second line of "Jabberwocky", p. 21. Williams, Madan & Green report, No. 87, this as the first American edition, using Macmillan plates but with a rearrangement of the preliminary leaves and no advertisements at the end. Macmillan also published an American edition in 1872. Both the Macmillan and Lee & Shepard issues were in the usual red cloth used for the Alice books; our copy is in the publisher's scarce green sand-grain cloth binding. Light wear to the edges; the front free endpaper was replaced at an early date with similar paper; one signature stands proud; small neat repair to the rear hinge; occasional light soil and staining, else a very good copy.
