Boston: L. Prang & Co. 1864-1865. First edition. Stiff card. Six hand colored panoramas from Prang's Christmas Stocking Series (complete). Housed in the rare publisher's box which lists the complete series on the inner lid (and arguably the only way to know for certain how many stories comprised the complete collection). A little over 4 inches in height by 2½ in width, each stiff printed folder houses a concertina panorama of a dozen hand colored panels printed on one side only.
This edition of 'A Visit from St. Nicholas' is reputedly the first card edition, in accordion-fold format. Prang later went on to introduce the Christmas card to America.
'A Visit from St. Nicholas' has a neat repair to both the spine and a closed marginal tear of the front cover (both repairs from within), a light crease, and a couple of small abrasions, else it is in fine condition. 'In the Forest' has a light abrasion on the spine of the folder, and 'Who Stole the Bird's Nest has a small marginal nick on the rear edge of the folder. Aside from these minor blemishes, this is a fine, bright set and rare in such condition. Fine. Item #18321
