Tacámbaro, Michoacán: Taller Martín Pescador, 2014. Illustrated by Artemio Rodriguez. Limited edition. Hardcover. Folio. 88,(2)pp. Vellum spine blocked in a decoration by the artist, vellum corners, raw silk cloth boards, title label printed in red and black on the upper board. Black and dark green end papers. Finely printed letterpress on handmade paper of just the right shade of green, and made by Pasquale De Ponte in San Lucas. The text is a new and wonderful translation by John Ridland. He has masterfully evoked the original alliterative verse in modern English. This is the first edition of the complete translation, parts of it having been published in literary journals from 2005 to 2010.
As a fine press book, this is clearly a masterpiece. The handmade paper is of a perfect shade of pale green to carry the text, set in Bembo Titling and Poliphilus types cast by Bradley Hutchinson. Finely bound by Jace Graf at the Cloverleaf Studio of Austin, and housed in a finely crafted slipcase of black cloth and handmade paper sides with a printed paper spine label in the same design as on the spine of the book.
The total edition of this printing was 226 copies, 200 being numbered, but the special lettered 26 copies finely bound, bearing the illustrations in deep green and a special page tipped in signed by the translator, illustrator, typefounder, printer and binder. (The illustrations are printed in black in the numbered edition.) This is letter Y'; of the special edition. Fine. Item #18789
