London: The Folk-Lore Society, 1888. First edition. Hardcover. Tall 8vo. xv,(1),281,(1)pp. Original brick-colored cloth, spine gilt and the boards blocked in a design in black with a gilt logo on the upper board. Chocolate-colored coated endpapers.
Front inner hinge cracked but strong; a small spot on the upper board, else this is a fine copy.
Folk-Lore Society, No. XXII. There are two early ownership signature on the first pages: Robert Brown, in a neat hand, and that of a Harley Street doctor, name illegible (what did you expect?)
The author was the son of publisher David Nutt, and took over the business on his father's death. He was a friend of Jessie Weston and shared her interest in the Celtic origins of the Grail legends, even publishing her works on the subject. He also founded the Folk-Lore Journal.
