A lovely and pleasant binding by Zaehnsdorf of full purple polished calf. Spine in six compartments intricately gilt, with a tan morocco lettering label. The boards with triple simple gilt borders terminating in floral tools at each corner. All edges gilt. Gilt inner dentelles. Marbled endpapers.
Bookplate of Stuart Rendell (1834-1913) dated 1886. Rendell was Rector of the University of Wales and a Liberal Party member from Montgomeryshire. A prelimiary blank bears a presentation in his hand to one Edward Jones dated 1895.
This first Moxon illustrated edition usually has a medallion frontispiece of Tennyson, not bound into this copy. A few very faint traces of foxing, spine lightly sunned, but a near fine exemplar.
