Hamilton (Ontario): Ruthven's Book and Job Office, 1842. First edition thus. Hardcover. 8vo. viii, 455pp. Contemporary binding of full leather, gilt spine title with gilt rules on the spine. Presentation inscription dated 1984 else a fine copy with only a trace of wear.


With English and Mohawk on facing pages. Pp. 433 to the end are the Psalms of David, with separate title page, and in Mohawk only.


Parts of the Common Prayer were translated into Mohawk as early as 1715, with subsequent editions each adding more and more. This edition is the first to contain the translation of Rev. Abraham Nelles (1805-1884), for 35 years in the Grand River Community the Rector of the Mohawk Church and Mohawk Institute, a day-school for Mohawk students.


This edition also completed the Book of Common Prayer by the addition of the Collects, the Services of Baptism, Confirmation, Visitation of the Sick, Communion of the Sick, etc., all translated by John Hill, Jr., into Mohawk.
