Stuttgart (Philadelphia): Krais & Hoffmann (John Weik), (1851). First edition. Hardcover. This is clearly the first edition printed in Stuttgart by Krais & Hoffmann, but their imprint has been covered by a label printed with "Philadelphia, Verlag von John Weik. 1857", presumably for the American market.
Oblong 4to. Complete with 39 full-page lithographed maps and cross sections colored by hand, and three engraved plates with multiple views. The atlas contains celestial, geological, hydrological and geographical maps; the plates depict meteorological, geological and physical phenomena. Plate 6 has the usual note: Neue, nach A. v. Humboldt's Angabe, revid. Tafel.
Contemporary black leather, gilt tooling on spine and gilt title on upper board. The binding is generally worn and rubbed, with a neat repair to the upper hinge; the marbled endpapers are soiled and chipped at the edges; the plates have light aging and fingering; but overall this is a good copy.
This Atlas volume was reportedly done by Bromme with Von Humboldt's permission to accompany the latter's monumental Kosmos. In German. The Philadelphia imprint information has not been found by us on any other copy.
