New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1883. First edition. Hardcover. Folio. (6), 24pp followed by 44 plates by Lemercier & Co. Green cloth decorated in gilt and dark green on the upper board and in gilt on the spine. The cloth is rubbed at the edges and hinges; there is a bookplate and card from Gump's library on the front pastedown, a Gump blindstamp on a preliminary blank and a Gump single line stamp at the base of the half title. Other than these, this copy is in very good condition with the textblock and plates in fine condition.
Audsley chose a single plate of a Japanese lacquer plate from his "Ornamental Arts of Japan" and shows the process of chromolithography, one color at a time. 22 colors were used, and the 44 plates show each color separately before being combined with those used before. A stunning production.
