London: John Russell Smith, 1858. First edition. Very good. Three volumes. 12mo. Half calf. Spines in six compartments, gilt; leather lettering pieces, gilt; marbled paper boards and endpapers; red edges. Armorial bookplates.
Introduction and notes by Thomas Wright, The Introduction is of bibliographical importance as it sketches the history of the early editions of Malory: Caxton (one complete copy; one incomplete); de Worde (two editions, one copy of each known); Copland; East; and finally the edition of 1634. Traces of rubbing to the leather and wear to the board edges else this is a very good to near fine set.
Wright is a conscientious and painstaking editor, and his explanatory and editorial notes are useful. His work was a great success and was reprinted throughout the century.
