(London): Longmans & Co., 1849. First edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Item #21709
4to. Leather spine embossed in blind and with the publisher's ornate boards on heat-stamped wood. 34 thick pages printed on both sides in chromolithography and with every other page highlighted in gold. The text is taken from the Book of Ecclesiastes, sometimes called the Book of Wisdom, ascribed to Kohelet, son of David, King in Jerusalem. There is light wear to a portion of the spine hinge, and the text pages show light foxing, yet this is one of the best preserved copies of a binding that notoriously failed. It is also reputedly the only book cover ever known to have been produced by the heat stamping process (Maclean, p. 31).
