Madrid: Imprenta de los Herederos de la Viuda de Juan Garcia Infanzon, 1751. Hardcover. Good. Item #23485

Segunda Edición, 4to, (28) 176pp. Errata printed on page (17). Woodcut on p. 70 of the kind of cross on which San Felipe was crucified in Japan. Woodcut chapter heads and tails. 19th cent (?) speckled calf spine, tooled in blind and gilt, leather lettering label, gilt, marbled boards and endpapers. The title page is soiled and has been remargined with slight loss to the corners of the printed boarder; some page corners have been repaired; the final page (index) has been mounted on tissue for strength; a small stamp on the upper right corner of the title, else this is a good copy. Some copies of this have a portrait of San Felipe preceding page 70; this copy is bound without it.

Franciscan Frier Philip of Jesus (San Felipe de Jesús), 1542-1597, a native of Mexico City, was traveling from Manila to Mexico to be ordained when his ship was driven by a storm onto the coast of Japan. There he and his companions were jailed and ultimately executed. He was canonized in 1862.

Palau notes the first edition was printed in 1683. Fairly scarce. In Spanish.
