George Todd Downing was a Native American writer born of Choctaw heritage in Atoka, Indian Territory in 1902. He became Oklahoma's first successful writer of detective novels. 'The Mexican Earth' is his only non-fiction work and was written after extensive excursions in Mexico. Not surprisingly, he identified with the native Indios and his narrative is from the indigenous point of view.
