Le Morte Darthur
Boston: The Medici Society, n.d., ca. 1920. Hardcover. Near fine / Very good plus. Item #23788 .
Two volumes. 8vo. 36 color plates by Flint. Blue cloth, gilt, to esges gilt, in near fine condition. The scarce dustwrappers are present, each with a full color paste-on of one of Flint's illustrations. The dustwrapper paste-one are lightly rubbed, and the wrappers are chipped along the top edges. A colored insert has been placed behind the wrappers within the protective mylar covers to blend the chipped parts and present a near fine appearance.
This is the first US trade edition of Malory with the Flint illustrations, first published in Great Britain in a limited edition in 1911.
The work begins with a bibliographical essay by A. W. Pollard covering the life of Sir Thomas Malory and then the printing history of the Morte d'Arthur. Caxton's Preface follows, a literary gem in its own right.
