The Tomb of Iouiya and Touiyou
London: Archibald Constable and Co. Ltd., 1907. First edition. Hardcover. Very good. Item #24628 .
Folio. xxx,(2),48pp. Illustrated with 44 full page plates, some of them in full color, as well as six illustrations in text. Original green cloth, gilt titles. The cloth shows wear at the corners, edges and spine tips, and some disintegration of the cloth finish on the boards, so the binding is only good. One of the plates has a couple of corner creases, else the text block is very good plus.
This tomb was the most significant archaeological find in the Valley of the Kings before the finding of King Tutankhamun's tomb. Iouiya (also Yuya) and Touiyou (also Tjuyu) were the parents of Queen Tiyem the chief wife of Amenhotep III, and the great-grandparents of King Tutankamun. The frontispiece is a full color plate of the nearly complete chariot decorated with rosettes in gilded plaster.
Theodore Davis provided the text on the finding of the tomb, Gaston Maspero provided notes on the couple; Percy Newberry described the objects found in the tomb, and Howard Carter supplied the illustrations.
Rare in first edition.
With the 'compliments' card of Theodore Davis laid-in.
Price: $1,250.00
