The Misfortunes of Elphin

Newton, Montgomeryshire: The Gregynog Press, 1928. Limited edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Item #24696

8vo. (4),119,(1). Purple buckram spine, gilt; blue patterned cloth boards. Finely printed on hand-made Matchelor paper. Illustrated with wood engravings by Horace Walter Bray. Onlky a trace of subing to the binding; the spine is unfaded; a near fine copy.

In theory one of 250 numbered copies, but in reality this is possibly a unique copy: the limitation number has been neatly excised, and the publisher has added in ink, "for exhibition purposes only." Gregynog exhibition copies were intended to to showcase the press's craftmanship.

The "Misfortunes of Elphin" were composed after ancient Welsh material, inclusing the
Boddi Maes Gwyddno', the Hanes 'Taliesin' and the 'Mabinogion'. As can be expected, King Arthur figures prominently in the story. We even have an account of Taliesin recovering the abducted Guinevere.

Howey A-1950. Gregynog Bibliography No. 12.
